Case Study: AI-Powered Brand Protection
North Country Smokehouse (NCS) is a premium meat producer known for its craft approach, clean ingredients, and commitment to quality. With a growing portfolio of SKUs and flavors, NCS relies heavily on color to differentiate products, reinforce brand recognition, and present a cohesive, high-quality presence at retail.
For a brand built on trust and consistency, packaging is not just functional – it’s a visual extension of their quality promise.
The Challenge: Subtle Color Variations Create Real-World Risk
As the NCS product line expanded, color accuracy became increasingly critical – and increasingly difficult to manage.
Small, subtle color shifts that occur as brand packaging evolves were causing printed labels to pass traditional QA checks unchecked. Minor color variations were difficult to detect during receiving and inspection, and quality evaluation teams were often a step removed from the brand and marketing intent.
This disconnect created several compounding issues:
- Brand Protection Risk
Labels with color inconsistencies were being used in packaging production because the tolerances were too subtle to flag visually. - SKU Confusion on the Shelf
When color inconsistencies appeared across the same SKU in a set, the products displayed side by side looked disjointed. This inconsistency diluted brand impact, created consumer confusion, and undermined NCS’s premium positioning. - Production Errors
Color differences are often used to distinguish SKUs. When those differences were muted or inconsistent, production teams were more likely to pull incorrect labels, increasing rework, waste, and risk.
Ultimately, color variation wasn’t just a print issue – it was a cross-functional communication problem, where expectations between marketing, QA, and production weren’t always clearly aligned or objectively defined.
Solution: A Smarter Path to Color Quality Assurance
To solve this challenge, ImageTek implemented a new, AI-supported Color Variation Quality Assurance process designed to move color evaluation from subjective judgment to measurable control.
Developed with input from Apple Manufacturing Academy, ImageTek built a scalable solution focused on repeatability, clarity, and early detection.
How We Did It:
- Defined Color Benchmarks
Each NCS label now has a trusted, measurable color reference established under controlled lighting and calibrated imaging conditions. This benchmark serves as a single source of truth across print runs. - Objective Tolerance Thresholds
Instead of relying solely on visual inspection, ImageTek introduced quantified tolerance ranges that clearly define what is acceptable – and what is not. - AI-Supported Detection & Diagnosis
Based on established thresholds, ImageTek developed advanced imaging and AI-driven analysis protocols that allow them to:- Detect subtle hue, density, and saturation shifts
- Identify patterns across batches
- Flag deviations early and trace them back to root causes
- A Purpose-Built QA Environment A dedicated color evaluation station was put in place to ensure consistent lighting, angles, and capture conditions – removing environmental variability from the quality process.
The Impact for North Country Smokehouse
This new approach delivers tangible benefits across the entire supply chain:
- Consistent Shelf Presence
Products now appear cohesive and intentional when displayed together, reinforcing brand recognition and premium quality. - Reduced Production Risk
Clear color differentiation between SKUs minimizes the chance of incorrect labels being pulled during production. - Stronger Brand Integrity
Color consistency supports NCS’s quality mission in a visual, immediately recognizable way. - Improved Cross-Team Alignment
Marketing intent, QA evaluation, and production execution are now aligned around objective standards – not assumptions.
A Scalable Foundation for Brand Protection
For North Country Smokehouse, color accuracy is no longer a subjective checkpoint = it’s a controlled, measurable process. For ImageTek, this project represents a broader commitment to helping brands protect their identity, reduce risk, and deliver consistency at scale.
